When we say “The Receipts,” we don’t mean theory.
We mean we went through it. We mean we’re still going through it. Every story in this section is something Tonja, our family, or our community has actually lived — not something we read about in a book or pulled off a research paper.
The Receipts is where we drop the real talk. Not polished. Not pitched. Just honest accounts of what it looks like to navigate Chicago, raise a family, work inside the system, take care of yourself, and try to build something better — all at the same time.
Why this matters
A lot of advice out here comes from people who never had to take it. Folks writing about poverty who’ve never been broke. Folks writing about community who’ve never lived in one. Folks telling you what to do who’ve never had to do it themselves.
That’s not what this is.
When we tell you something on PlantTheVegan, it’s because we tried it, we watched it, or we’re in the middle of it right now. The wins. The losses. The frustrations. The wisdom that only comes from being on the ground for years.
That’s why it’s called The Receipts
Because we got the receipts. We can show you. We can tell you exactly how it went, what worked, what didn’t, and what we’d do different.
If you’ve ever read advice that didn’t fit your life — this section is for you. We’re not here to perform. We’re here to share what we know because somebody shared with us first.
That’s the receipt. That’s the work.
